Welcome to Kutralam
Main falls is one of the natural and spectacular waterfalls in the world. It is well known for so many health reasons. The water flowing in this Podhigai Hills flows through a lot of herbs which are very good for health.
This falls is in good flow of water during the months of June to December, during the monsoon months of south India. Major attraction of this falls is One can take bath in this natural and herbal water. One is supposed to drink copious amount of water while bathing. The water is very fresh and clean.
As soon as one takes bath there is total rejuvenation and you feel extremely hungry. Generally people before taking bath apply oil ( mainly sesame oil ) right from head to toe. At a time nearly 200 to 300 people can take bath. There are 2 seperate sections for ladies and gents. There are so many lingams and images of gods sculpted on the surface of the rocks over which water flows making it a divine falls.
This water when taken continuously for 6 months can cure some of the digestive problems and also can cure urinary infections. In fact my gandma used to take this kutralam water in the season months and it helped her avoid urinary infections. People who usually throng this place take bath here for 3 times a day just before every meal.
Kutralam as a tourist spot has certain specialities
1. Thirunelveli halwa - shops are available on the way to the main falls. The halwa supplied here is hot and fresh and it is a sweet delicacy as tourists can never afford to miss this. It is good to take this after taking bath.
2. Masala Paal ( Masala Milk ) - Mostly seen from 5 pm till midnight around street corners in tea shops. This masala milk is also a treat if taken after bathing. It is also good to go to sleep after taking this.
3. Aruvi Thundu ( a towel specially made for bathing in falls ) - This towel is made from pure cotton in different colours and is available in various sizes. It is also made of thin cotton fibre and hence this towel gets dried very quickly by the breeze . This towel is available in most of the textile shops around the town. It is cheaper when compared to the regular towels people use. Definitely one should not miss this.
4. Childrens Park - A visit to this place is a must if one goes with kids. The park is located on a hillock near the bus stand. Wind flow is very good here. A snake park is also available near this park.More...
